Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. For the last 30 years, ITHQ has been developing, promoting and teaching its own university programs. However the law of the Province of Quebec didn’t authorize many specialized schools to deliver university degrees accredited by the State. In parallel, ITHQ has been working over the past 10 years to amend its status (which has been public) and be authorized to deliver its proper accredited university degree.
Although its expertise and quality of teaching are confirmed and recognized by the industry and other hotel schools, its status as a governmental institution, according to the laws of the Province of Quebec, didn’t allow ITHQ to issue a university degree on its own. It had no choice but to sign specific partnerships with other universities for that purpose.
Thanks to many years of sustained team efforts and the outstanding work of the CEO Liza Frulla, the Government of Quebec has finally voted an amendment to ITHQ’s constitutive law, on Tuesday June 12th 2018, allowing ITHQ to deliver its own accredited bachelor’s degrees. This is a victory and the beginning of a new era for ITHQ.
As an expert in its field for over 50 years now, ITHQ is Canada’s leading hotel management school specializing in tourism, hospitality, food service and sommelier training. All under one roof, it offers vocational (secondary level), technical (college level), and university-level programs, as well as continuing education. ITHQ also has a teaching hotel, two teaching restaurants, an expertise centre as well as a gastronomy research centre.
